News from Malawi
Fr Rodney Schofield, a regular New Directions contributor, reports:
Forward in Faith (Malawi), founded last year by Fr Dennis Kayumba (priest-in-charge of All Saints Cathedral in Nkhotakota), is slowly gaining support among both clergy and laity – and now has an episcopal patron. Archbishop Bernard Malango has recently moved from the Diocese of Northern Zambia, and was enthroned as the first Bishop of Upper Shire in late January 2003. Already a member of Forward in Faith North America, he has now pledged his support as patron of the work in Malawi. Although as yet the Anglican Church in Malawi retains mostly Catholic practices and beliefs, it is clear that this is facing increasing challenges, both from the liberal agenda and from an aberrant ‘born again’ streak that is undermining sound teaching, dedicated pastoral care and orderly worship in the central region. Hence we are delighted to have an Archbishop who is not ashamed to declare his commitment to traditional values.
NEW OFFICES FOR FORWARD IN FAITH Forward in Faith has moved house! Our address etc. is now: 2A THE CLOISTERS GORDON SQUARE LONDON WC1H 0AG TELEPHONE: 020 7388 3588 FACSIMILE: 020 7387 3539 E-MAIL: FiF.UK@forwardinfaith.com
Still that time of year again!
With last month’s New Directions, we distributed to all our members our Treasurer’s Report for the past year, along with Renewal Forms for all those who pay their subscription other than by Banker’s Order. Please save Forward in Faith money by paying now, rather than leaving it for so long that we have to incur further costs in sending you a reminder! And please remember – whatever you do, please do NOT use any of our old prepaid envelopes that might be gathering dust in your home (addressed to Tufton Street) to send in your payment. It simply won’t reach us!
Silver and Gold
Congratulations to all priest members of Forward in Faith celebrating the anniversaries of their Ordinations this Petertide and in particular to those celebrating their Jubilees. Notable amongst them are the Forward in Faith Regional Dean for the North West, Fr Eric Lowe, who celebrates his Golden Jubilee at S.Agnes, Ullet Road, Liverpool at 12.00 noon on Saturday, 21st June and Fr Tim Bugby SSC, Superior General of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, who celebrates his Silver Jubilee at St Augustine’s, Highgate at 8.00 pm on Thursday, 26th June.
Women Bishops and a Free Province: How
. . . is the title of a Teaching Day, which Fr Geoffrey Kirk (with assistance) is prepared to come and run in your part of the country. As the time of reckoning draws ever nearer, it is essential that we communicate to all our people just what women bishops in the Church of England will mean, and why Forward in Faith is so determined to ensure that adequate provision is made for the third of our Church who will in conscience be unable to accept such a change.
Fr Kirk has set aside a number of days in his diary this year when he will be available to visit groups of Forward in Faith members and sympathisers in order to address just these issues. His programme has but few requirements: first, it needs not less than 40 and not more than 100 participants; second, it must be open to both clergy and laity; and, last, it should be planned to run for four hours, including time for group discussion, but excluding breaks for lunch etc.
And so it is over to you! Discuss the matter in your parish, your diocese and your region, so as to open the event to the sort of numbers that are needed. Choose a suitable venue, with easy access by public transport and good parking for those who travel by car. Then, contact Fr Kirk direct on 020 8318 1295 in order to arrange a date and then advertise the event as widely in your area as possible. Finally, contact the Director at Faith House with all the details, so that they can appear both on this page (see below) and on the Forward in Faith International Website at www.forwardinfaith.com
